I believe in driving in the left lane of a freeway only when passing. I have made it my personal driving philosophy to restrain from cruising in the left lane of “fast lane” when I am not passing another car. It is very important to practice this simple driving procedure to allow for traffic to flow in a smooth manner. This is actually a major aspect of universal driving etiquette and is even the law in some states. There is a reason for the timely signs stating “Slower Traffic Keep Right” which I have applied to my daily life when on the roads. With so many drivers out there traveling to so many different places all with varying time constraints, it is vital to the functioning of our society to respect a simple courteous procedure of driving in the left lane only when passing.

I travel the our familiar North County Corridor, the 78 freeway, several times a week and have become frustratingly aware of normal driving tendencies even when there is only sparse traffic. I have also traveled extensively along major interstates through hundreds of both municipal and rural settings which I believe have designated me as an experienced highway driver. The dominant attitude I have experienced among people on the west coast, especially right here in North County, is that of completely oblivious drivers who insist on pitching a tent in the left lane and utterly destroying the flow of traffic. Once in a while I come across a car that passes the necessary vehicles and then promptly moves over into one of the center lanes. Unfortunately this does not happen often and mainly is only experienced on two lane highways out in the middle of nowhere like in the Arizona or Utah deserts.

It may seem that this driving problem is simply a minor nuisance hindering impatient fast drivers, but I believe that is not the case. A driver who is sluggishly creating traffic in the left lane represents a larger idea of the frequent oblivious and essentially clueless nature of many people in society. Their inability to grasp the fact that they are not the only people on the road is the aspect which truly frustrates me much more than just the driving aspects. I believe drivers need to place a greater emphasis on others around them and make a conscious effort to adopt this simple procedure reflecting common courtesy while simultaneously improving the quality of all our social interactions.
